Developing Self-Directed e-Learning

Techniques for creating asynchronous, self-directed, e-learning training materials.

OVERVIEW

Today’s fast-paced world demands just-in-time learning, and e-learning meets the needs.  You are challenged with creating and developing highly interactive asynchronous, self-directed programs that will engage and motivate your learners. Examine what is required to take advantage of technology capabilities, and when and how to apply them most effectively.

Development activities emphasize the attention to detail necessary in e-learning and give you practice in making decisions related to content, testing, instructional strategies, media and individualization of learning.  Through structured exercises, you’ll develop an appreciation of the tasks required for the creation of self-directed e-learning, the level of effort to create e-learning components, and the decisions that you, as a developer, must make before programming begins.

Who should attend:

  • Developers who must design and develop self-directed e-learning or multimedia.
  • Managers or purchasers of self-directed e-learning or multimedia.
  • Instructors interested in including self-directed e-learning components in their courses.
Who Should Not Attend:
  • Individuals looking for training on: online collaborative training design; generic instructional design; ROI calculations; or detailed information on the latest technology.

Workshop Objectives:

  • Describe and apply the Systematic Learning Process.
  • Use an Instructional Strategy Framework to characterize instructional strategies and make choices.
  • Determine when e-learning is an appropriate choice.
  • Identify common weaknesses in learning interactions.
  • Design instructionally-correct learning interactions.
  • Review course content and analyze objectives.
  • Plan the training structure and navigation paths.
  • Determine the best content sequencing.
  • Apply the principles of adult learning to course design.
  • Apply motivational techniques to e-learning.
  • Design a basic lesson.
  • Create a storyboard/script.
  • Identify how lessons may be made adaptive.
  • Create and interpret instructional flowcharts.
  • Design an application exercise.

Course Outline:

The content in this workshop is organized into five sections of self-directed learning activities that include: self-instruction, guided reading assignments, paper-based lessons and tutorials, review and analysis of samples, assessment tools, and online exercises and lessons that include presentations with audio, flash animations and video. It is designed to span two to three months and includes a kick-off live session and weekly “office hours”. Participants submit some assignments to the facilitator for feedback and may choose to work on an e-Learning project from their own workplace. This involves preparing a series of deliverables up to the storyboard stage and sending them to the facilitator for feedback.
